Achmad Yurianto, the man who has, without fail, given the nation daily updates on the pandemic since the first reported cases in March, has left his role as the government’s spokesperson for COVID-19-related matters.

Achmad confirmed today that he is now dedicating all of his time to his job as the director general of the Health Ministry’s Disease Prevention and Control department, which he held before and in conjunction with his role as the country’s main COVID-19 spokesperson.

Assuming Achmad’s vacated role will be COVID-19 Task Force Experts Staff Chief Wiku Adisasmito, who is set to deliver the daily briefing from today onwards.

In June, the government appointed another spokesperson, celebrity doctor Reisa Broto Asmoro, who had since assisted Achmad in delivering daily COVID-19 briefings to the nation. It’s understood that she is resuming her role.

In related news, President Joko Widodo has merged the COVID-19 Task Force with a new economic recovery task force, forming a larger COVID-19 committee. The new body is headed by Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartanto.
