Still attached to his umbilical cord, a baby boy, allegedly dumped by his mother, was discovered under the shade of a tree on Jl. Pandu yesterday afternoon. The police are still carrying out investigations regarding the identity of the baby’s parents.

According to a report by Kumparan, local resident Ni Wayan Sugiarni, 40, uncovered the newborn after hearing faint crying sounds and seeing something stir inside a bag, mysteriously abandoned under a tree at the side of the road.

“The witness was on the way to buy bakso (meatballs) on Jl. Hayam Wuruk, and when she passed the crime scene, she noticed the backpack lying under the tree,” said East Denpasar Police Chief, AKP Nyoman Karang Adiputra.

Shocked to discover the bag’s contents, Sugiarni called upon the help of parking attendant, Ketut Kariana, 47, and soon local shopkeepers arrived at the scene too. The baby was taken to Padma Batra Clinic on Jl. Hayam Wuruk before being referred to Merdeka Medical Center (MMC) for further care.

“After being checked at the MMC hospital, the baby was taken to Puri Raharja hospital for immediate treatment. The baby’s condition is stable… We suspect that he was discarded by his mother because she was pregnant out of wedlock,” said Adiputra to Nusa Bali.

Sadly, this isn’t the first case of baby-dumping in Bali. One of the most tragic cases happened earlier this year, when a pair of newborn twins were found dead, their tiny bodies lacerated with stab wounds, on a street in Denpasar.
