An Indonesian woman who abandoned her newborn twin babies on a street in Denpasar, leaving them to die, could face a lifetime in jail.

A set of newborn twins girls were found dead with stab wounds, thrown away like trash on Sunday.

The alleged suspect identified in local news reports as “D” was taken into custody on Sunday evening. West Denpasar Police Criminal Investigation Unit Comr. Ario Seno Wimoko says police have been unable to properly examine the 22-year-old woman because of her physical condition.

“The condition of ‘Mother D’ is still weak from after giving birth. We have left her in Trijata Bhayangkara Bali Police Hospital in order to get treatment and after issuing an arrest warrant against her,” Wimoko said on Monday, as quoted by Tribun Bali.

“D” has been designated as a suspect of child abandonment, a criminal offense in Indonesia. She is threatened with charges Article 341, 342, and 343 of the Criminal Code and Criminal Code of Child Protection, as the murder of the babies seems like it was carried out in a premeditated manner.

It’s alleged that the young woman acted out of shame for getting pregnant out of wedlock—which is obviously no excuse for a crime so despicable.

The suspected father of the newborns, identified as “V” was additionally arrested on Wednesday in West Manggarai, Flores, an Indonesian island east of Bali.

“The suspect is being picked up and handed over to Denpasar, Bali Police,” West Manggarai Police Chief Supt. Julisa Kusumawardono confirmed on Wednesday, as quoted by Detik.

The bodies of the newborn babies were found around 11am on Sunday by local residents of Jl. Ratna in Denpasar.

Local residents initially mistook the bodies for a cat carcass.

“Neighbors could smell the body, so we thought a cat died. It was going to be removed, then residents got a shock,” local resident Julius told Tribun Bali.

The man also told Tribun that the bodies had been wrapped in white plastic bags and a cloth.
