Police on Sunday arrested a North Okkalapa man suspected of beating his month-old son to death following a fight with his wife over her Facebook use.
Police officer Tin Tun Aung told Anadolu Agency that the suspect, Nay Lin Htet, 23, had repeatedly accused his wife of neglecting their son to use Facebook on her phone.
“The incident happened after their fight over use of social media,” Tin Tun Aung said. “He then beat the baby when he lost his mind.”
Police arrested Nay Lin Htet after his wife told police about the killing.
Crimes against children frequently make the news in Myanmar. Last week, a baby was found abandoned in Sagaing Region. Two other babies were abandoned in Yangon in February; one died.
In October 2016, an “exorcist” killed three children in Twante Township during a magic ritual. The ritual reportedly put the parents in a trance as they watched their children being beaten to death.
