The cliché goes that Myanmar loves to shop…in Bangkok. While the well-heeled still head overseas for serious indulgences, Yangon is home to a glorious selection of local retail offerings. Bogyoke Market is home to scores of vendors selling beautiful fabrics from across the country, as well as the usual tourist souvenirs. International brands can be found in the few malls, the newest of which, Myanmar Plaza, is a multi-story structure typical of the region. Fashion styles are changing, too, though the traditional longyi is still the dress of choice for both men and women. If there’s something worth buying or a style worth following (or puzzling at), you can bet we’ll be reporting it on Coconuts Yangon.
