A newborn baby boy was found at the gates of a monastery in Monywa, Sagaing Region, on April 19. The baby had been left under a mosquito net with some cash and milk.

“We heard news at around 8pm that a newborn baby was found abandoned near the monastery and hurried there. It could be life threatening to the baby if left alone for too long, but the baby is unharmed because whoever did it left the baby boy in a neat little package with blankets and a mini-mosquito net,” Ayetharyar Ward administrator Than Htun Aung told Eleven.

“The child even had Ks 20,000. There were also milk bottles. It seems like whoever did this is fairly well-to-do.”

Local police took the boy, and a policeman has reportedly adopted him.

Abandoned babies frequently make the news in Myanmar. A week-old infant was discovered in an empty apartment in South Okkalapa Township, Yangon, on February 15. The baby survived, and police said they were investigating the matter.

Three days earlier, a baby was found in Yangon’s Tamwe Township with its umbilical cord still attached and a fractured skull. It later died in the hospital.
