The run of Singapore’s taxi and private-hire drivers going above and beyond the call of duty (here and here) to help passengers in need continues.
In the wee hours of Wednesday morning, driver William Lee noticed a teenage girl walking by herself along the Sengkang East Drive toward Punggol East, according to a Facebook post that has now gone viral.
“I figured she must have missed the bus and walking home,” said Lee in the post. “I stopped next to her and asked her whether was she going to PG and offered her a free lift as that place was very dark.”
As it turned out, the girl was headed to a community club to watch a World Cup football match.
“She was taken by surprise and said she wanted to go to the Punggol 21 Community Club to watch the England game with her friends,” said Lee.
Still, he wanted to make sure she got to her destination safely, taking her all the way to the community club.
Lee also posted videos from his taxi’s dashcam along with the post. The first film shows a solo figure walking along a busy road at night — the girl he picked up.
The second shows the road outside the community club where he dropped the passenger.
Facebook users could not get enough of the story of the driver who went out of his way to ensure the safety of his fellow citizen, with the post shared hundreds of times. Commenters replied with words of appreciation and gratitude, as well as quirky, feel-good reaction gifs to express their admiration.
Mr. Lee said the girl thanked him repeatedly before leaving the taxi, but his comments about the whole experience warmed our hearts the most.
“It had been a good day for me and a perfect ending to make it all the more better.”
