Touched by an act of kindness by his passenger, a Grab driver provided a free-of-charge ride to a Malay woman who volunteered to bring a Chinese child with down syndrome around to celebrate the Hari Raya festivities.

According to Grab driver Alvin Tan, he received a booking during a price surge period last Saturday. The two passengers he picked up was a Malay lady and a Chinese child, who was said to have down syndrome.

“While chatting, (I) realized this Malay lady is a volunteer bringing this Chinese kid to celebrate Malay festivals,” he wrote. The conversation also revealed that they would usually take public transport back home to the child’s mother — but on this occasion, the child was exhausted, and the woman was willing to pay a higher fare out of her own pocket for a Grab ride.

The fare itself was relatively affordable at $14, but it was the woman’s selfless spirit to spend her time and money with the child that moved Tan. Upon reaching their destination, the Grab driver did not charge her, letting them have a ride for free “as a way to say thank you for your kindness”.

“Thumbs up (to) this lady for being a great lady,” Tan wrote in a Facebook post. “She really need(s) my salute.”
