A local Grab driver is being recognized on social media for a good deed. Pearleen Meixin booked a Grab ride home in the early hours of June 20, expecting a simple drop-off at the end of her trip.

But imagine her surprise after arriving at her destination around 2am, when her driver offered to stay and wait with her until she safely returned home.

“This Grab driver is awesome!” wrote Pearleen in a Facebook post. “Why? Because he (offered) to wait for the lift with me as it was like around 2am.”

Pearleen told Coconuts Singapore that while she often takes Grab when traveling late at night, she had never seen a driver go above and beyond like this.

“At first, when I alighted, he too wanted to alight,” she told us. “I was shocked.”

In fact, Meixin found the gesture so unusual, she was suspicious of the driver’s motives. “One thought is like ‘eh, what is the uncle doing, man. Is he trying to do something?” she said to Coconuts Singapore.

The driver told her he would accompany her to wait for the lift to make sure she got up safely. But she did not think it was necessary.

“I told him, ‘Aiya, uncle, no need. Here is very safe,’” she said. “But the uncle insisted and waited with me.”

So impressed by his actions thatPearleen she decided to share her story on social media, where it has been shared and re-shared dozens of times.

Readers love the post too, and many of those touched by the story left heartfelt comments. “He probably has a daughter like you,” wrote one Facebook user.

The post includes a photo of the driver — a middle-aged man in a tracksuit — standing at a corridor with a slight smile on his face.

This feel-good story for Grab Singapore comes in the wake last week’s news that the company was under pressure to get thousands of its drivers fully licensed before the 30 June deadline.

Pearleen is grateful for her driver’s gesture and has some advice for his employer.

“I feel the uncle is too kind and Grab should reward the driver,” she told Coconuts Singapore. “It’s not easy for the elderly to work in the wee hours too.”

We reached out to Grab for a comment on this story, but have yet to hear back.
