A woman reportedly committed suicide by jumping from the fourth floor of Taman Anggrek Mall in West Jakarta yesterday. A short clip showing her lying on the ground floor of the mall has been circulating online.
She reportedly died at the scene before receiving medical help. Mubarak, chief of the Tanjung Duren sub-precinct, ruled the incident as a suicide. The woman, who was around 50 years old, went to the mall by herself.
An employee of the mall, identified as F, said that at around 6pm yesterday, she saw the woman walking around a spot on the fourth floor and sat down on a bench alone. She then stood up on the bench and leapt from there, with F saying that she left a green bag before jumping off.
The victim was then transported to Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM) in Salemba, Central Jakarta for an autopsy. As her identity is not yet known, police are still looking into the case and questioning witnesses and checking CCTV recordings of the incident.
Indonesia currently does not have a dedicated government-run suicide prevention hotline, but if you or anyone you know is suffering from depression and/or contemplating suicide, you can get more information and resources from several local NGOs dealing with mental health and suicide prevention, such as intothelightid.org.
