It’s an extra special Boxing Day this year, as the last solar eclipse of the decade will take place today – and we here in Jakarta will be able to catch a partial glimpse of the cosmic phenomenon.
The annular solar eclipse will be visible from several provinces in Indonesia, in which the moon passes in front of the sun and leaving leaving a glowing ring of sunlight around it. Bali, for instance, will get to witness the “ring of fire” eclipse in its most glorious form today.
Jakarta, meanwhile, will get to see a partial solar eclipse.
According to Planetarium Jakarta’s senior researcher Widya Sawitar, if you’re in Jakarta (and its satellite cities Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi), you can witness the partial solar eclipse from 10.42am. The “peak” of the eclipse is predicted to occur at 12.36pm and will conclude at 2.23pm.
Planetarium Jakarta at Taman Ismail Marzuki (TIM) in Central Jakarta and PP-IPTEK Museum at Taman Mini Indonesia Indah in East Jakarta are holding special eclipse viewing events to mark the occasion.

If you’re planning on looking at the sun this afternoon, do remember that doing so is dangerous and can damage your eyes. Don’t forget to wear proper eye protection (such as eclipse glasses) if you are going to observe the eclipse directly.
Or, if you’re not super prepared, there are several options to watch the whole thing unfold online, which don’t require safety glasses. Check out Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency’s live streaming of the event if you want to see how the “ring of fire” eclipse unfolds from several provinces in Indonesia.
