Aesthetically speaking, Jakarta is an acquired taste. At first glance, there don’t seem to be many beautiful spots to take gorgeous photos in the capital, unless backgrounds featuring macet (traffic jams) is your thing.
Vice Governor-elect Sandiaga Uno, who, along with Governor-elect Anies Baswedan, is set to assume office next month, believes that Jakarta lacks locations that are Instagram-worthy.
“Now let me ask you, where in Jakarta is Instagrammable? People now like to find beautiful spots for Instagram photos,” Sandiaga told reporters today, as quoted by Kompas.
Sandiaga’s solution is to revitalize some of the city’s historic spots, including building facilities around them like sidewalks and public transportation so that they are more easily accessible to the snap-happy public.
“The Istiqlal Mosque is pretty but there’s no angle to take a good photo from (from afar) because the view is blocked by parks and the high fence,” he said.
While this might seem like an insignificant issue for a future government official to be concerned with, Sandiaga perhaps might have a point. After all, Instagram is hugely popular in Indonesia, with a recent study showing that there are 45 million active users in the country.
But are we really deprived of “Instagrammable” spots in Jakarta? Well, we think you just have to know where you look, and these 15 locations can be a start.
