Undercover operation gets police into early morning shootout with carjackers in Depok

Members of the Jakarta Police Motor Vehicle Theft Unit (Subditranmor) clashed with carjackers in front of Depok Town Square early this morning, resulting in a shootout that left two criminals seriously injured.

Police Commissioner Krishna Murti said the perpetrator has been the target of an undercover operation by member of Subditranmor. The arrest is the result of investigations into three actors who had been arrested earlier in Cibubur.

“The police tried to entrap them during a transaction with the syndicate that sells stolen cars,” Krishna told Tempo.

Undercover officers, posing as buyers, got the thieves to agree to a meeting on Jalan Margonda Raya. At the meeting, one of the suspects became aware of the setup and tried to escape by brandishing his gun. The police responded in kind, leading to a shootout.

“They had been warned, but they responded with gunfire,” Krishna said.

The dramatic shootout ended with two of the suspects taking bullets to the spine. They were rushed to Kramat Jati Police Hospital.
