TransJakarta carried 123.7 million passengers in 2016, up 20% from previous year

TransJakarta had a 2016 to remember, with the city-owned public bus operator reporting a very productive year.

In a press conference today, TransJakarta First Director Budi Kaliwono announced that the company saw a substantial increase in passengers during 2016 when compared to 2015.

“The number of passengers in 2016 increased to 123.7 million, up from 102.8 million in 2015,” Budi said, as quoted by BeritaSatu today.

In other words, the number of TransJakarta passengers rose 20% from 2015 to 2016.

Budi attributed the increase to a number of factors, including the company introducing 600 new buses to the fleet (even though 200 were replaced), and adding 42 new routes last year, which is more than the total number of routes that were available in 2015 (39).

The fact that many of TransJakarta’s new buses are much higher in quality than the old ones (and have not spontaneously combusted, as happened every so often to the previous, now retired, Chinese-made models) has probably also played a part in persuading more passengers to ride last year. Not only that, the Jakarta Provincial Government has enacted policies allowing seniors and schoolchildren to ride the TransJakarta for free.

TransJakarta should be able to increase the percentage of riders even more this year if the company is able to fulfill its promise of adding 2,000 new buses to the fleet, raising the total number of buses in the armada to 3,300.
