Tainted homemade liquor kills 8 in East Jakarta, manufacturer arrested

The proliferation of adulterated homemade alcohol continues to claim lives in Indonesia, as eight people recently died in the capital after drinking tainted liquor.

The police yesterday arrested a woman identified by the initial N who is suspected of playing a large part in the home production and distribution of tainted liquor in Cakung, East Jakarta.

“We have detained one suspect by the initial N. We’re on the hunt for one more [suspect], hopefully the arrest will be made soon,” said Jakarta Metro Police Spokesman Raden Prabowo Argo Yuwono, as quoted by Okezone yesterday.

According to the suspect, she mixed up alcohol with unspecified chemical substances, before adding energy drinks, water, and honey to add flavor to the homemade liquor.

Each bottle of liquor was sold for Rp 15,000.

“She confessed that she had been selling the liquor for around three months,” Raden said.

Two people who drank N’s liquor died in a hospital on Sunday morning, raising the drink’s death toll to 8, after 6 other drinkers died previously.

Adulterated homemade liquor regularly claims victims in Indonesia, with critics arguing that the heavily restricted sales and steep prices for regulated alcohol leads many to purchase cheap, yet deadly, tainted liquor.
