Police in Banyuasin regency, South Sumatra have arrested a young man who allegedly raped and killed his own elementary school teacher, citing childhood grudge as a motive for the crime.
The incident occurred on Wednesday evening at around 4pm, when the suspect, identified as 18-year-old AR, reportedly visited the victim’s house, identified as 49-year-old EY, in Sumber Marga Telang sub-district, after watching porn videos. Authorities said EY was a widow and had been living alone at an official residence located within the school area.
“After watching [porn] he entered her house quietly and peeked at the victim, who was taking a shower. He was hiding behind a refrigerator [near the bathroom],” Ginanjar, who heads the Banyuasin Police’s crime investigation unit, said today.
When EY exited the bathroom, AR immediately strangled her with his hands until she passed out, and took her to the guest room.
“At the guest room, the victim was raped until she screamed for help. He stuffed her mouth with a piece of fabric and strangled her neck with a belt, a charger cable, then tied her hands with a raffia cord,” Ginanjar said.
AR panicked after realizing that EY had recognized him, and he tightened the belt around her neck, effectively killing her. AR then took her body to the kitchen and placed her in a plastic tub, where he covered her with a bed sheet that was then tied with a cord.
EY’s lifeless body was discovered yesterday afternoon by her colleague, who grew suspicious after noticing that her front door was closed with the keys hanging outside. Police said EY was found naked with a bruise around her neck, though there were no other visible injuries on her body.
AR attempted to flee when he was apprehended at his home in Muara Telang sub-district yesterday. Police also confiscated two mobile phones belonging to the victim from him.
Muara Telang sub-precinct chief Gunawan said that AR is still holding a grudge against the victim, telling authorities how EY often scolded him when he was in elementary school, during which time he was known as a naughty student, especially toward his female classmates.
Authorities suspect that AR may have a porn addiction, and said he would often visit EY’s house to peek at her as she was showering.
Police haven’t announced formal charges against the teenager. Under Indonesian law, rape-murder is a crime punishable by up to 15 years in prison.
