The Greater Jakarta Area has seen a spate of incidents involving rocks and bricks being tossed from pedestrian bridges over toll roads, with the latest occurring on the Jakarta-Merak toll road on Wednesday.
According to police, at around 11pm that day a car containing a family of four was being driven on the aforementioned highway. Just as it was about to pass underneath a pedestrian bridge situated above the toll road at the 49 km checkpoint, somebody tossed a rock — approximately the size of a football —from the bridge, smashing through the car’s windshield.
Luckily, the rock passed through the middle of the car and didn’t cause fatal harm to the driver or the passengers.

However, the rock reportedly grazed the driver and front seat passenger’s arms. The driver managed to drive the car a further 3 km before pulling over and being replaced by a passenger as they drove to a nearby hospital.
The injuries the driver and the front seat passenger sustained were reportedly minor and they were discharged from the hospital today.
The police have yet to identify any culprits.
“We have questioned witnesses and reviewed CCTV footage. The rock is now a piece of evidence,” said Serang City Police Chief AKBP Indra, as quoted by Kompas yesterday.
On June 8, a driver died on the Jakarta-Cikampek toll road after a brick was tossed from a pedestrian bridge, smashing through his car’s windshield and directly hitting him. No arrests have been made in that case.
On June 12, police arrested two teenagers, aged 17 and 15, for pelting pebbles from a pedestrian bridge onto the Jagorawi toll road in East Jakarta, though it’s unclear if they were responsible for other similar recent incidents in the city.
