Recently, the video above, showing three Indonesian men shooting their guns into the air during a wedding party, went viral on Indonesian social media. The video begins with one man, who seems quite underdressed for the occasion, shooting what appears to be a machine gun into the air while mere feet away from some children. After he pops off, those children rush towards him, seemingly to pick up the bullet casings from the machine gun.

Two more men, both more appropriately attired, then come out and shoot their handguns into the air. Nobody at the wedding party seems to be perturbed by the gunfire.

That was because, according to the police, the shooters were themselves members of the police force who wanted to make up for the lack of celebratory fireworks at the party.

“The leader [of the three] is part of the extended family [that was holding the wedding party]. He had an initiative to bring excitement to the party because there was a distinct lack of fireworks,” Commisioner Pandra Arsyad, spokesperson of the Lampung Provincial Police, told Suara yesterday.

Pandra said the video was taken in North Lampung regency on Sepember 15. He added that celebratory fireworks were common for parties in the region, but they have been in short supply lately.

The three cops are still under internal investigation and it’s not yet clear if they will face any sanctions.

While celebratory gunfire is quite common in other parts of the world (looking at you, USA, where some children were actually injured because of this practice earlier this year), Indonesia has very strict gun control laws and firearms licenses are only given out to members of the police and military, and even then they are only allowed to fire the guns in the line of duty.
