Police in the Meranti Islands regency of Riau reportedly shot dead a man after he allegedly attempted to attack police officers at a precinct yesterday.
According to the Riau Police, the victim was apprehended by an officer yesterday afternoon after he jumped in front of motorcycles to prevent them from passing through a road.
“He was causing public unrest, so he was taken to the Meranti Islands Precinct,” Riau Police spokesman Rizki Kurniawan told reporters today, as quoted by Kompas.
There, the victim, who appeared to be agitated and upset, told the police that he was angry that he was recently ticketed and that his motorcycle had been confiscated. It’s unclear what traffic infraction he allegedly committed, or if his claims were indeed true.
Despite efforts from officers to calm him down, the man challenged them to a fight and began chasing them with a plastic pipe. He then took out a badik (traditional dagger) from his waistband and tried to stab the officers with it.
At that point, the police said, officers shot the victim.
“He died on the spot,” Rizki said.
Police say the victim’s identity is unknown as he did not have any ID on him.
