Police in Jogjakarta, Central Java, have arrested a man suspected of the rape and murder of a 27-year-old deaf-mute woman at her home on Saturday.

According to the police, the suspect, whose identity was not disclosed, broke into the victim’s home while she was alone as her parents were out working. The victim’s sister later found her naked and lifeless body at around 9 am after becoming suspicious that the front door of the house was left open.

“The victim is believed to have been killed by strangling because there’s a black mark around her neck,” said Police Commissioner Sugiarta of the Sedayu Precinct, as quoted by Detik.

The police also have evidence that the victim was raped before she was murdered. The suspect ran away with a 24-inch flat screen TV, IDR4 million (US$295) in cash, as well as a necklace the victim was wearing.

The victim’s father believes his daughter was assaulted and killed because she refused to tell the burglar where valuables were hidden in the house.

“I want the perpetrator to be punished as heavily as possible,” he said in tears during the victim’s funeral on Sunday, as quoted by Detik.
