Police arrest 6 terror suspects who wanted to attack Singapore’s Marina Bay by firing a rocket from Batam

The Special Detachment 88 (Densus 88), Indonesian police’s elite counter terrorism unit, this morning arrested 6 suspected terrorists — aged 19 to 46 — who plotted a terrorist strike against Singapore.

National Police spokesman Inspector General Boy Rafli confirmed the captures, which was carried out in operations throughout the island of Batam. The group reportedly belongs to the Katibah Nusantara network, the Southeast Asian militant unit under the Islamic State.

Boy said that a man identified as GRD, thought to be the leader of the group, had plotted to launch a rocket into neighboring island Singapore’s Marina Bay along with Bahrun Naim, the alleged mastermind behind the terrorist attack on Jakarta in January.

GRD is also suspected of facilitating the smuggling of people from Turkey to Syria to join terror group ISIS. The group also has ties to the suicide bomb attack in Solo last month.

We’ll have more on this developing story as more information becomes available.
