Sad news from Jakarta’s culinary scene as the co-owner of popular steak franchise Abuba Steak, Aminah, passed away on Saturday after contracting COVID-19. She was 57 years old.
Her passing was confirmed by Abuba’s management in a statement released today.
“Aminah died on Oct. 3, 2020 and the funeral procession was conducted according to COVID-19 protocols,” the statement reads.
Aminah’s husband, Abu Bakar, and their son, Abuba’s director M Ali Ariansyah, also tested positive for the coronavirus. According to reports, Abu and Ali, along with a domestic worker identified as Juminah who was also infected, are currently being treated at a hospital and a puskesmas (community health clinic) in South Jakarta.
Abuba’s management said they have conducted contact tracing on employees who had been in contact with Aminah, Abu Bakar, and Ali since late last month. They all reportedly tested negative for the coronavirus.
Over the weekend, Jakarta’s Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) ordered temporary closure of Abuba’s first restaurant in Cipete, South Jakarta for disinfection and it has reopened for takeaway starting today.
Known for their simple and relatively affordable steak dishes, Abuba Steak first opened in Cipete in 1992. They have since expanded with 27 locations across the Greater Jakarta Area and Bandung, West Java.
