Free internet at a public facility is basically a crowd magnet in Indonesia, and officials in Jakarta may have just realized that they’ve shot themselves in the foot by providing free Wi-Fi at all TransJakarta bus stops despite the ongoing pandemic.

City-owned PT TransJakarta yesterday announced that commuters can now enjoy free Wi-Fi at all 252 TransJakarta bus stops in the capital.

“The hope is that this will convince the public to take public transportation in Jakarta. With this facility, commuters can stay productive while waiting for their bus at the bus stop,” TransJakarta’s Executive Director for Digital Transformation Gidionton Saritua said at a virtual briefing yesterday.

The Jakarta Transportation Agency welcomed the technological upgrade, but warned that precautions need to be made to prevent Wi-Fi loitering in and around bus stops.

“Loiterers may crowd the bus stops, ramps, or even the foot bridge. This could happen if people want to take advantage of the Wi-Fi without going on the bus,” Transportation Agency Head Syafrin Liputo said.

“We are still in a pandemic, so I ask that PT TransJakarta anticipate crowding at their facilities.”

Addressing Syafrin’s concern, Gidionton said that the Wi-Fi strength is only optimal at the bus stops.

No prior registration, username, or password are needed to access TransJakarta’s free Wi-Fi. Once logged in, commuters can enjoy a respectable surfing speed of 20 Mbps.
