North Sulawesi teacher appointed headmistress for non-existent elementary school

A long-serving teacher in North Minahasa, North Sulawesi made headlines this week after her son came forward and revealed that she was appointed headmistress for a school that never existed.

On Instagram, a man named Azam Alfarizi Wonggo posted a slideshow and chronicled what happened to his mother, who is identified by her initials RJBA. Addressing the residents of North Sulawesi, Azam shared how RJBA had received an invitation via a phone call to attend an inauguration and swearing-in ceremony for new school principals on Monday. She was even asked to submit some documents as a requirement.

The post includes a video that appears to have been captured by RJBA herself during the inauguration ceremony, while the second is a screenshot of a document listing the names of new principals along with the schools they are assigned to. There are also photos of RJBA during the ceremony.

“During the inauguration ceremony, my mother’s name was mentioned as a headmistress of Kecil Warukapas Public Elementary School. The problem here is that the school does not exist in Warukapas village, Dimembe district, North Minahasa regency,” Azam wrote.

Warukapas village chief, whom Azam claimed to have contacted, also confirmed that the school did not exist. RJBA had also gone to Minahasa’s Employment, Education and Training Agency (BKPP), but did not receive a satisfactory response.

“The agency said they only just found out that the school does not exist, and my mother had to wait for the next 2-3 months for another batch of assignments. Now here are my questions: Who made up the name of that school? What’s wrong with the government?”

Azam said the family will seek justice for his mother, noting how the incident is insulting for RJBA, who had served as a teacher for 35 years. He also called on the government to investigate those involved in the matter.

North Minahasa Regent Joune Ganda, who was present during the ceremony, said the government will launch an investigation, asserting that agencies involved will be sanctioned accordingly.

Meanwhile, BKPP has yet to provide a public statement at the time of publication.
