Police say a man was stabbed in East Jakarta after he tried to tell a motorcyclist not to drive against the flow of traffic on Jalan Dewi Sartika in Jatinegara, East Jakarta.

According to reports, the victim, 59-year-old Sudirman, was waiting for an angkot minivan on the side of the road when he spotted a motorcyclist driving in the wrong lane. Sudirman stopped the motorcyclist and told him not to break traffic laws.

“It turned out that the perpetrator did not appreciate the reprimand, so he took out a knife-like object and stabbed the victim,” said East Jakarta Police spokesman Commissioner Wasiyem, as quoted by Kriminalitas yesterday.

“The victim was rushed to Budi Asih Hospital because he had been stabbed in the abdomen.”

The police have not identified Sudirman’s attacker, but witnesses say that his arm was fully tattooed. He drove off towards Kramat Jati in East Jakarta after stabbing Sudirman and leaving him on the side of the road.

The police did not reveal the severity of Sudirman’s injury.

While many motorcyclists in Jakarta are civil and obey the rules, they have been getting a bad rep lately due to the actions of a few who have responded with violence when they were told they were breaking the law. Just last week, two motorcyclists were enraged and attacked pedestrian rights activists after they were told not to drive on a sidewalk in Central Jakarta, during an incident that was caught in a viral video.
