Having been accustomed to the everyday conveniences of ojek (motorcycle taxi) drivers provide to us, it’s sometimes easy to take them for granted and realize that life on the road pose some serious risks for them.

A Go-Jek driver named Widodo, from the Central Java city of Solo, was killed last week while on the job. According to a viral Facebook post, Widodo died while he was delivering food for a customer.

In the post, a Go-Jek customer wrote that she ordered pizza to be delivered by the ride-hailing service. Not long later, she received a phone call from a Go-Jek driver telling her that his friend, Widodo, who was carrying her food, was killed after he was hit by a motorcycle as he was crossing the always busy Jalan Adisucipto.

The customer went on to say that she was contacted by a Go-Jek representative who told her about Widodo’s accident, and that the company would refund her order. She posted a screenshot of her order screen as proof that Widodo was delivering her pizza.

As reported by Solo Pos, local police confirmed that Widodo, 40, was killed in an auto accident last Thursday. Police say the ojek driver was driving his motorcycle to cross Jalan Adisucipto — while carrying the pizza — when a motorcycle being driven at a speed of at least 60 km/h on the road struck his. Widodo suffered fatal cranial injuries and passed away at a nearby hospital.

The motorcyclist who hit Widodo reportedly escaped relatively unscathed, but the front of his two-wheeler was destroyed.
