Parking in Jakarta may get at least ten times more expensive if the administration revs ahead with a proposal for an ostensibly green initiative that also aims to help reduce traffic in the capital.
Under the scheme, vehicles that have not undergone or failed emissions testing may be categorized under the highest parking fee tier — IDR60K (US$4.15) per hour — at public and commercial parking spaces.
As a point of comparison, most Jakarta malls currently charge around IDR5K (US$0.35) per hour for parking.
“The plan is that there will be three locations to trial the highest parking fee for vehicles that fail emissions testing,” Jakarta Transportation Agency Syafrin Liputo said today, referring to Central Jakarta’s IRTI parking lot, DMV parking lots, and Blok M Square in South Jakarta.
Vehicles with tax arrears may also be subject to high parking fees, Syafrin added.
All that being said, the provincial government said the enforcement of the initiative might still be a ways away given that it has only recently begun drafting up the proposal.
