Cyclists in Jakarta have been afforded another concession on the road despite intense condemnation about their apparent sense of self-entitlement in recent weeks.
The Jakarta Metro Police and the Jakarta Transportation Agency said they are now allowing cyclists — especially those on racing bikes who have an apparently insatiable need for speed — to ride on lanes previously designated for motorized vehicles from 5am to 6:30am.
“This is to give room for sport bike users who say that their speeds are inadequate when they ride on the available bike lanes,” Jakarta Metro Police Traffic Department Director Sambodo Purnomo Yogo said today.
“So we will accommodate them as part of a win-win solution, and we will have comfort and safety on the major roads.”
Sambodo’s comments came just days after he said law enforcement is considering fining or even confiscating the bikes of cyclists who ride outside the bike lane.

Cyclists were also given exclusive access to the Tanah Abang-Kampung Melayu overpass on weekend mornings, on top of all the new bike lanes built by the current city administration amid a cycling boom during the pandemic.
