Gaga, who’s 21 years old, was found guilty of negligent driving. The East Jakarta District Court this morning sentenced Gaga to 4.5 years in prison and slapped him with an IDR10 million (US$696) fine in lieu of an additional two months imprisonment. The sentence was in line with what public prosecutors previously demanded.

Presiding Judge Lingga Setiawan read out some factors that aggravated Gaga’s sentence, including inconsistencies in his admission of guilt throughout the trial.

“The defendant conveyed his guilt, but the panel of judges didn’t see consistency from the defendant in this regard. The defendant does not show any guilt,” Lingga said.

The panel of judges also highlighted Gaga’s defense in attempting to divert the negligence factor in the accident to the other party, in this case Laura, who he said was also guilty for not properly wearing her seatbelt.

“The defendant did not provide any material assistance that could help the victim and her family. The family only demanded a compensation of IDR12.6 billion (US$877,107). The crime was triggered by drunkenness, and drinking alcoholic beverages is not in accordance with religious teachings,” Lingga said.

Laura passed away at 21 after spending the last two years of her life paralyzed from a spinal cord injury she sustained in a car accident with Gaga in December 2019. Gaga was reportedly driving under the influence, and crashed the car into a truck.

Shortly after the incident, Gaga set up a Kitabisa page calling for donations to help Laura’s recovery — for which they received massive public backlash as the couple were known for displaying their lavish lifestyle online.

However, Gaga, who sustained minor injuries from the incident, allegedly neglected Laura and did not even take care of her medical expenses.

After almost two years since the accident, Laura sued Gaga for negligent driving and causing her injuries. Gaga had been in the custody of the East Jakarta Police since early November, while Laura’s official cause of death in December has not been publicly disclosed.
