The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued a warning for potential extreme weather such as tornadoes, heavy rain accompanied by lightning, hail, and other extreme rainfall phenomena in Jakarta and throughout the archipelago this week.

“The public is urged to remain vigilant and careful toward the potential of extreme weather and the impacts it can cause such as floods, landslides, flash floods, puddles, strong wind, fallen trees, and slippery roads,” Guswanto, BMKG’s Deputy of Meteorology, said in a statement today.

Similarly, the Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT) also predicted that heavy rain will pour over Java island for the next four days. The agency said that the heavy rain is caused by the emergence of a low pressure center in the southwestern part of Java island.

Guswanto, meanwhile, said that the heavy rains may be caused by the increased growth of rain clouds above the Indonesian territory in the next week. There are several causes for the rain clouds to form, including the unstable dynamics in the atmosphere.

Extreme weather is likely to occur in most parts of Indonesia this week, as heavy rain — along with lightning and strong winds — is predicted to hit at least 24 provinces across the islands of Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, and Papua. The complete list of the provinces can be found here.

Just under a year ago, the Greater Jakarta Area, as well as parts of Banten and West Java, saw the most intense rainfall since 2007 on New Year’s Eve, which continued well into New Year’s Day. According to official data, 67 people were killed by floods and landslides while tens of thousands were evacuated from their homes.
