We’re not sure what the first rule of a fight club in the Indonesian city of Makassar is, but there’s certainly no Brad Pitt-esque prohibition to talk about it given that a video from an event has gone viral nationwide.

Police in the South Sulawesi capital are investigating a recently surfaced video showing a no holds barred street fight between two men — a scene that many have likened to David Fincher’s 1999 cult hit Fight Club.

The men wrestled and landed blows on each other as spectators formed a ring around them, ending in one forcing the other to submit with an inescapable lock. Unlike in the movie, however, the men fought with their shirts on and the contest was refereed by at least two men.

According to reports, the street fight regularly occurs at different locations in the city, with fighters and spectators notified about upcoming events via a messaging app.

“We are investigating this. We are looking at the locations where the fights took place,” Makassar Police Crime Investigation Unit Chief Jamal Fathurrahman said yesterday.

An Instagram account believed to have been run by the promoters of the so-called fight club has gone off the radar amid police interest in the case.

In the account’s profile, the promoters said that they arrange the venue and what is implied to be prize money “for those who want to struggle.”
