Nurul Faqih, a student of Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University (UIN Jakarta) died in an accident on his way to his commencement ceremony. He was 22 years old.

The accident took place yesterday morning at 5am, in front of Ben’s Radio office in Ciputat, South Tangerang. His motorcycle reportedly collided with that of another driver, who has been identified as Wahyu Maulana. Faqih died instantly due to injuries on his face and bleeding from a head wound.

Ciputat Police Chief Endy Mahandika said Faqih’s parents were waiting for his arrival at the campus and began asking for his whereabouts after some time. They were then told about the accident.

Faqih’s older brother, identified as Imam Rosyandi, took part in the commencement on his behalf, as seen in the video uploaded by UIN Jakarta yesterday.

“Farewell, our brother Nurul Faqih bin Hasanudin (Faculty of Psychology), today is your commencement day, but Allah The Most Merciful has called you to come before Him. May Allah give you a place by His side and the family left behind be given strength and patience. Alfatihah,” the caption read, ended by a #UINberduka (#UINisGrieving) hashtag.

The family reportedly took Faqih’s body back to their hometown of Indramayu regency in West Java yesterday, accompanied by several of his friends.

Faqih’s friends told local media that the deceased had been a helpful person who was active on campus, expressing shock over what happened. One of his friends told Detik that they found out about his accident when the students gathered on campus early yesterday morning for the ceremony.

Chief of Tangerang Selatan Police’s Traffic Accident Unit Dady Arsha said yesterday that police didn’t find any helmet at the scene of the incident. Dady said Faqih’s head hit the road while both motorcycles were allegedly in full speed at the time of accident.

“Both of them didn’t wear their helmets. During the investigation of the scene, we didn’t find any single helmet. It looks like the victims didn’t hit the vehicle, but their [heads] hit the road. It’s true that the motorcycles collided front to front,” Dady said, as quoted by Detik.

Though the case is still undergoing investigation, police said they currently cannot proceed further as the other driver, Wahyu, is still in a coma.
