A nurse who works at a beauty clinic in Kalipare district, East Java’s Malang regency is suffering from severe burn injuries after an unidentified man threw flammable liquid on her face and set it on fire.

The victim, identified as 33-year-old ESW, was taking a break on Monday afternoon when the man barged into her workplace. According to reports, he wore a mask, helmet, and black jacket, and arrived at the clinic using a red scooter.

The man approached ESW and splashed flammable liquid on her face before lighting a match and setting her face on fire. The assailant then immediately fled the scene, which only had the child of the clinic owner as the only witness to the attack.

ESW’s fellow nurses then took her to a nearby hospital after the attack. She’s reportedly conscious and is receiving medical treatment for her burns, which covers at least 60 percent of her face, chest, and hands.

Authorities have so far questioned at least four witnesses, with Malang Police Chief Hendri Umar saying that they suspected two among them to be involved in the crime.

“We’re still looking into the case, the investigation is still ongoing. We will question the people related to the victim, because there’s an alleged love triangle,” Malang Police Crime Unit Chief Donny Kristian Baralangi said today

“There’s information that the victim is allegedly in a relationship with another man, although she has a family on her own. But we still need evidence to confirm it.”

Donny explained that ESW is a key witness in the case, as she might reveal those responsible for her attack. However, police have been unable to question her yet as she is still under intensive care following her surgery yesterday evening.
