Oh, the things people will do for love…

Authorities say that a prisoner named Muhammad Said escaped from the Cipinang Penitentiary in East Jakarta on Friday night and they suspect that a woman working at the prison as an administrative officer, identified by her initials YH, helped him do so.

“[The escape] is currently being handled by the General Crimes Directorate,” Cipinang Warden Oga Darmawan said yesterday as quoted by Tempo. “I received reports suggesting that YH had been in a relationship with inmate Said.”

Officials said YH previously worked as a cook at the prison but they suspected that she had become romantically involved with Said, who was serving a 19-year sentence for a narcotics offense, so she was moved into the administrative position three months ago.

Said’s disappearance was only detected on Saturday when a prisoner headcount revealed that only 4,165 of the prison’s 4,166 inmates were present. After sweeping the facilities, officials checked the CCTV camera footage and saw that a car owned by YH had entered the prison complex on Friday night and they immediately suspected that she had played a role in his escape.

Their theory is that she managed to get Said out of his cell and smuggled him out of the prison in the trunk of her car.

YH was arrested on Saturday at her home in Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta. Police say she admitted to helping Said escape but did not give any indication as to where he might be now. Police are still searching for him.
