A 7-year-old boy was severely injured while his parents sustained minor injuries after they became victims of a hit-and-run in Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta on Sunday.
The incident, which was caught by CCTV cameras, showed the young family walking on the side of the road at a residential area in the morning, when a black Mercedes-Benz swerved to the side and crashed into them from behind. The driver immediately drove away and did not assist the victims.

“The father sustained minor injuries, the mother sustained minor injuries, but the son was severely injured. He is in hospital care at the moment, at the ICU for brain hemorrhaging,” Jakarta Metro Police spokesman Yusri Yunus said during a press conference yesterday.
The driver, a 21-year-old college student identified by his initials MRK, turned himself in on Tuesday. To the police, he confessed that he wasn’t paying attention to the road as he was adjusting his seat belt at the time, and he drove away after the collision because he was in shock and scared of the consequences.
MRK was charged with negligent driving that caused severe bodily harm under the 2009 Law on Traffic and Transportation, which is punishable by up to five years in prison, as well as failure to assist a crash victim under the same law, which is punishable by up to three years in prison.
