A man in East Jakarta broadcasted his suicide live on video sharing app TikTok yesterday, which authorities say had alerted the victim’s friend to the incident.

The victim, who has been identified as 29-year-old SS, reportedly hanged himself at his home in the Bidara Cina neighborhood of Jatinegara district.

“The hanging was first known from the victim’s friend who watched his TikTok live. We immediately went to the scene,” Markon Samuel, an officer from East Jakarta Metro Police, said today.

Markon said there was a bedsheet and a chair at the scene, which police say SS had used to hang himself. There were no wills or other visible telling signs of why he decided to take his own life, he added.

Authorities are still questioning witnesses as they continue investigation into the case.

Indonesia currently does not have a dedicated government-run suicide prevention hotline, but if you or anyone you know is suffering from depression and/or contemplating suicide, you can get more information and resources from several local NGOs dealing with mental health and suicide prevention, such as intothelightid.org.
