A motorist has been charged with negligence after he ran over a young boy in Kembangan, West Jakarta.
The incident occurred on a narrow street in the district yesterday afternoon, with a CCTV recording of the gruesome incident having circulated widely online.
The boy, identified as 5-year-old AC, was playing with his friends but without parental supervision when the motorist, identified as ZA, was about to drive away from where he parked near the children. ZA pulled out of his spot slowly but he allegedly didn’t see AC, who was squatting to the right of ZA’s car at the time, and the boy was run over with the car.
Purwanta, who heads West Jakarta Police’s Traffic Unit, said yesterday that ZA hit AC because he wasn’t “careful.”
ZA was named a suspect after the police questioned him along with several witnesses, and he has since been detained. He’s been charged with negligent driving under Indonesia’s Traffic and Road Transport Law, which carries a maximum sentence of six years in prison.
No charges related to negligence were filed against ZA’s parents or anyone who let the children play unsupervised.
AC reportedly sustained injuries to his chest, arms, and legs, and is currently being treated at a hospital. His older brother told local media outlets that AC’s condition is stable after undergoing surgery, but that he’s still weak.
