Dozens of South Jakarta residents have been evacuated after their homes were flooded amid heavy rainfall throughout the capital on Sunday afternoon that carried on into Monday morning.
According to the South Jakarta Fire Department, as of 9am today, 48 people have been evacuated from East Pejaten — one of the worst hit areas by flood in the capital today.
The Peta Bencana smart city website, which gives real-time updates on floods in Jakarta, recorded 27 flooded areas throughout the capital as of this morning, with water depths reaching 1.5 meters.
Some of the worst-hit areas include East Pejaten and North Grogol in South Jakarta, and Cililitan, Kampung Melayu, and Bidara Cina in East Jakarta.
Thankfully, no casualties have been reported.
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) today warned all of Java, except Yogyakarta, to brace for more heavy rainfall and potentially more floods in the month ahead as we enter the peak of the rainy season.
Jakarta experienced its deadliest flooding in recent memory on New Year’s Eve 2020. The Greater Jakarta Area, as well as parts of Banten and West Java, saw the most intense rainfall since 2007, which continued well into New Year’s Day. According to data from the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), 67 people were killed by floods and landslides while tens of thousands were evacuated from their homes.
