Most people go to the cinema to get a fully immersive experience, but theatergoers in one Jakarta mall got way more than they bargained for yesterday.
The audience, which was watching “Beauty and the Beast” at the Cinema XXI in Mal Kota Kasablanka, South Jakarta, yesterday afternoon must have gotten quite a shock when the studio’s ceiling partially collapsed.
“The ceiling [collapsed] because of heavy rain,” cinema employee Mutia confirmed to Detik.
Mutia said that only a small section of the ceiling collapsed, falling on audience members sitting in the back rows.
“One was injured and taken to the hospital. It was a light injury, [the debris] didn’t hit their head,” she said.
The screening was cancelled following the incident. According to Mutia, everyone in the audience was issued refunds and XXI is covering the injured victim’s entire medical bill.
This is not even the first time a ceiling collapsed at a Cinema XXI this year in Indonesia. In January, large chunks of a ceiling collapsed at one XXI studio in Medan, North Sumatra, following an earthquake. Luckily, there were no reported casualties then.
