A young woman in Cianjur, West Java died today due to severe burn injuries, which were allegedly inflicted by the man she dated.
According to reports, 22-year-old ID had a heated argument with her boyfriend, 32-year-old D, on May 1 that almost resulted in their breakup. D went home and grabbed a can of gas, doused ID with it, and set her on fire.
ID reportedly suffered deep and severe burns that covered around 60 percent of her body and face. She was treated at the Hasan Sadikin Hospital in Bandung until she succumbed to her injuries in the early hours of today.
“She passed away this morning,” Cianjur Police spokesman Acep Nanda said.
Local police apprehended D today after he vanished following the attack and was named a fugitive.
Police have yet to announce charges against D, but under Indonesian law, this may be categorized as premeditated murder, which is punishable by the death penalty.
Worryingly, ID was the second woman to be torched by a lover this month. In Malang, East Java, a nurse who works at a beauty clinic suffered severe burn injuries after a masked man barged into her workplace, doused her with flammable liquid and set it on fire. Police have yet to name suspects in the crime, which they believe was motivated by tensions in a love triangle.
