Alfamart to equip its minimarkets with panic buttons as police expect spike in crime leading up to holidays

It’s surprising that the brave men and women who work the cashiers at Alfamart minimarkets are barely protected against criminals – but that’s about to change.

Yesterday, the Jakarta Metro Police briefed 450 Alfamart employees about crime prevention in their stores at the Alfamart head office in Cikokol, Tangerang.

Adjunct Grand Commissioner Anjar Gunadi, deputy director of Jakarta Police’s Public Development service, warned the employees that minimarket break-ins tend to rise in the lead up to the Christmas and New Years holidays.

“That’s why, outside of law enforcement, we’re taking preventive steps. To anticipate [against crime], we’re working together with Alfamart to build special safety systems in their stores that are connected directly to the police,” Anjar said, as quoted by Vivanews.

The safety systems mentioned include CCTV cameras, alarm systems, and panic buttons at the cashiers of Alfamart minimarkets in Jakarta.

Anjar said that there have been 30 minimarket robberies in Jakarta in 2015, but the police have only managed to solve 4 cases so far. Hopefully, the involvement of the police in the protection of Alfamart minimarkets will instill some panic into criminals when they think about robbing a minimarket.
