One may expect luggage to fall off the overhead compartment onto passengers’ heads, but an incident onboard an Indonesian train saw air conditioner units detach from the ceiling and injuring several unsuspecting passengers.

The incident occurred on the Cicalengka-Bandung train this morning. During the trip, three split AC units in two train carriages suddenly detached from the ceiling and fell on eight passengers below. Images from the aftermath that went viral online showed that all three ACs hanging from the ceiling from what appears to be at least one remaining screw each.

All eight passengers suffered minor injuries, but only two were taken to the hospital for treatment on cuts and bruising on the shoulder.

Railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) has apologized for the incident.

“We are investigating what caused the incident,” KAI Bandung spokeswoman Noxy Citrea wrote in a press release today.

“The train carriages in which the incident occurred have been replaced with new carriages and service has resumed as normal.”

Now that we’ve established that nobody was seriously hurt, we’d like to point out that it seems those who were injured kept their heads cool as there are no reports of them suing KAI.

Also, this is why centralized air conditioning makes more sense in fast-moving, often shaky vehicles like trains.
