Obligatory “did you feel that shake?”
Well, we just did in Jakarta. The Meteorological, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported today that a 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck off the southern coast of West Java at 10am.
The quake was recorded at a depth of 10 kilometers in the ocean. Thankfully, BMKG said there is no potential for a tsunami.
There have been no immediate reports of major damages or casualties. The closest major settlement from the epicenter is the city of Sukabumi (home to around 350,000 people) 113 kilometers northeast.
People have been taking to social media to report that they felt slight tremors and swaying for a few seconds in Jakarta and its satellite cities, including Tangerang and Depok.
We will update this story as more information becomes available.
