The Jakarta Provincial Government says it has found hundreds of violations regarding workplace operations during the Large-Scale Social Restrictions (PSBB) period, leading to the temporary closure of 101 offices.

According to official data, from April 14 to April 28 (PSBB was enforced in Jakarta starting April 10), 660 offices and places of business violated PSBB regulations. Among those were 101 non-essential workplaces that were not exempted from PSBB and have thus been temporarily shut down.

In addition, there were 119 non-essential workplaces that were granted exemption from the Ministry of Industry but had violated health and physical distancing protocols. The remaining 440 were essential workplaces that violated health and physical distancing protocols. These two groups were only issued warnings.

PSBB, which is essentially a partial lockdown, prohibits non-essential workplaces and services in the city to remain operational while it’s in effect, with employers urged to allow their workers to work from home.

City officials have reportedly been on the lookout for non-essential businesses that violate PSBB by remaining open, with the recent temporary closures being the most stern sanctions given reported so far.

But these numbers likely only scratch the surface of the actual number of violators in Jakarta. Governor Anies Baswedan, for one, said the fact that workplaces remained open during PSBB is part of the reason why public transit facilities, like the KRL Commuterline, remain crowded in the past couple of weeks (in addition to schedule cuts).

PSBB is in effect in Jakarta until May 22, but it may be extended if the government deems the coronavirus outbreak in the capital is not sufficiently contained by then.
