“Shaolin Warriors” combines kung-fu fighting with live action theater for killer combo (Feb 19-21)

Are you a fan of Bruce Lee? Jackie Chan? Jet Li? Po the Panda? Then you must be a fan of kung-fu, the ancient Chinese martial art that combines grace, speed, skill and strength into something that is just at effective at entertaining as it is at ass-kicking.

But even if you’ve watched plenty of big screen kung-fu brawls, how many of you have gotten the chance to see real life kung-fu warriors showing off their ridiculous skills?

Just in time for the start of the Year of the Fire Monkey, a theatrical kung-fu epic is coming to Jakarta that promises to contain all of the thrills of a martial arts movie extravaganza with the added bonus of all of the death-defying stunts being performed live before your eyes.

“Shaolin Warriors”, which is taking the stage at the Ciputra Artpreneur Center this weekend, will feature 24 highly-skilled martial arts performers from China telling the story of a young child who comes to join a Shaolin temple and learn the ways of kung-fu in the year 1620. The theatrical production was first created in 2000 and has toured all over the world, including performances in the United States, Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom.

The 105-minute show has received plenty of praise, including one reviewer for the Washington Post who said the performers in “Shaolin Warrior” “… combine the agility and grace of gymnasts with the showmanship of Cirque du Soleil performers.” Definitely sounds like something we’d like to check out.
