Indonesians are Instagram addicts. In June, the photo-sharing social network’s parent company, Facebook, released data showing that there are an amazing 45 million active Instagram users in Indonesia (which would equal about 17% of the population), so it’s not too surprising that the Indonesian capital of Jakarta would be one of the most Instagrammed cities in the world.

In fact, Jakarta was the 8th most popular city on Instagram this year according to recently released data from the company. Every year the social network looks at geo-tag data to determine which metropolis is most popular with shutterbugs, and this year our ibukota was ranked just above Istanbul, Turkey, and just below St. Petersburg, Russia, based on geo-tag data collected from January 1 to November 17.
In the 2016 rankings, Jakarta only came in 10th on the list, which means even more photos were focusing their lenses on the Big Durian’s cityscapes this year. It also shows a consistent upward trend as Jakarta did not make the top 10 in the 2015 ranking.

In first place in this year’s overall Instagram city rankings was New York City, followed by Moscow, London, São Paulo, Paris, Los Angeles, St. Petersburg, Jakarta, Istanbul and Barcelona.
Some might say Jakarta is far from the most photogenic city, with its surfeit of uninspiring architecture and crumbling grey concrete making up far too much of the urban landscape.

But we’d argue that, while it’s easy to take an amazing photo in a place like New York or Paris, it takes a truly talented photographer to find the hidden beauty or capture the ephemeral moments of wonder in the Indonesian capital. Fortunately, we have a lot of talented photographers here.
