A little over a year ago, we wrote one of the most absurd stories involving Indonesian celebrities we’ve ever come across (not that we cover much of Indonesia’s mainstream entertainment scene, admittedly), and the story has now developed with a serious legal twist.

First, a refresher: Early last year, comedian Vicky Prasetyo wed actress Angel Lelga in what was arguably the most widely publicized union in the country. What was also widely publicized was their separation after several months together, which included Vicky (and a crew from a national TV station) raiding Angel’s house out of suspicion that she was sleeping with another man.

It was such a dramatic moment and totally not scripted, you guys, or else how else would you explain the presence of an impeccably cut hole in Angel’s bedroom’s door, which allowed us to look inside as she argued with Vicky?

At any rate, Angel was eventually taken away in a police car after Vicky reported her to the authorities for cheating. Adultery, in the sense of a married person cheating on their spouse, has actually long been illegal in Indonesia but only spouses are legally allowed to report it to the police.

The two eventually divorced and while Angel was never officially charged with committing adultery, Vicky has been charged with defamation for accusing Angel of infidelity during the raid, as confirmed by authorities today.

“It’s true [that Vicky is a suspect],” Andi Sinjaya Ghalib, who heads South Jakarta Police’s Crime Investigation Unit, told Kompas today.

Vicky was reportedly charged with defamation under the criminal code and the Information and Electronic Transactions Act (UU ITE). He may face up to four years in prison.

Vicky has not been detained by the police, but he is expected to come in for questioning starting next week.
