The fairy tale wedding of local celebrities Vicky Prasetyo and Angel Lelga seems to have come to a spectacularly bitter end.

In February, their wedding was broadcast live on national TV including a part where Vicky jumped out of a helicopter into the sea to “prove” how big his love for Angel was (think of it as Indonesia’s Tom Cruise-loves-Katie Holmes moment). Just two months later, Angel accused Vicky of numerous extramarital affairs during a talk show.

In September, Vicky announced his separation with Angel through an Instagram post. Then, early this morning, in a story that has dominated headlines across the country all day, Vicky raided Angel’s home and supposedly found her with another man.

Vicky went to Angel’s house with his mother, the neighborhood chief, some police officers, local residents… as well as a video crew from a TV infotainment show. He seemed overwhelmed by emotion and broke down in tears when he saw his soon-to-be ex wife being unfaithful (even though they were already separated, but whatever, drama right?).

“Ya Allah, what kind of wife you are, everyone in Indonesia knows. I ask why you don’t protect your purity, you’re still my wife by law,” Vicky screamed to Angel while the two were separated by the latter’s bedroom door, which conveniently featured a big hole in the middle, as broadcast by Insert on Trans TV.

He also claimed to have evidence proving his wife’s affair, although the identity of her lover — who was obscured from view in the video —  has not yet been revealed.

But it turns out that this was more than just a personal altercation turned into media spectacle — it also became a criminal matter, with Angel leaving her house and led into a police car, all the while being booed by onlookers (because people woke up at 2 am to watch someone raiding his ex’s home, right?). She was taken to South Jakarta police station and her case is being handled by Women and Children Protection Unit.

Yes, Angel was taken in by police on suspicious of violating Indonesia’s rarely used law against adultery. As confirmed by his lawyer, Vicky reported Angel to the police for cheating, for which she will now have to undergo a forensic examination to prove if the adultery did take place.

Adultery, in the sense of a married person cheating on their spouse, has actually long been illegal in Indonesia but only spouses are legally allowed to report it to the police.

Under Article 284 of the Criminal Code (KUHP), those convicted of adultery under these circumstances may be punished by up to nine months in prison.

In February, lawmakers from the parliament (DPR) and the government agreed to some controversial changes to the law that would make all sex outside of marriage, as well as cohabitation of non-married couples, potentially illegal as part of a major revision to the country’s Criminal Code (RKUHP). However, that bill, with those specific stipulations, has yet to gain enough support for passage until now.
