Check out the highly-anticipated opening of Museum MACAN, Indonesia’s first modern art museum at their inaugural exhibit (Opens Saturday)

Ever since it was first announced in early 2016, art lovers throughout Indonesia have been eagerly waiting for the opening of the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nusantara (Museum MACAN), the first museum of its kind in Jakarta and the country. Well, this Saturday you’ll finally be able to check out MACAN out as the museum in Kebon Jeruk, West Java, is finally opening its 4,000-square-meter facility to the general public for its inaugural exhibit, titled ‘Art Turns. World Turns. Exploring the Collection of the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nusantara’.

The exhibition features 90 artworks from the museum’s collection, showcasing artworks by Indonesian and international artists, spanning a period of 178 years. Co-curated by Agung Hujatnika and Charles Esche, ‘Art Turns. World Turns.’ offers a reading of Indonesian art history in dialogue with global art history. It’s truly an amazing weekend for art loves in Jakarta, with not only the general opening of Museum MACAN but also one of the capital’s best art festivals, the Jakarta Biannale. This year’s edition takes on the theme of JIWA (which most directly translates as soul but also encompasses ideas of artistic energy and spirit) and will feature works from many of Indonesia’s most accomplished and rising artists, as well as creators from 50 other countries and will feature numerous live performances and symposiums. For more info and a complete schedule of events go to the Jakarta Biennale website.

Go cool hunting at Jakarta’s original hipster pop-up market, Brightspot

While pop-ups are a pretty regular thing in Jakarta these days (and have lost a lot of their cool cachet, consequently), the original Brightspot made a huge splash when it first debuted many moons ago, quickly becoming a required destination for the capital’s cool crowd. Brightspot is still a bankable brand name, but as it’s matured it has dropped the pop-up market moniker and is now billing itself as a “Modern Culture Festival”. While browsing the stall of curated products from indie labels is still the main draw, there will also be plenty of great F&B treats, art exhibits and best of all a free music festival within the festival, Revolution, featuring a number of great bands including Bottlesmoker and Agrikulture!

You don’t have to get rid of your Halloween costume yet, though unless you were already going as Rhoma Irama you might need to give it a dangdut twist. Pon Your Tone is an underground party series, started by one of Jakarta’s most beloved DJ’s, Dipha Barus, and this Saturday is PYT’s 3rd Anniversary so they’ve teamed up with Ismaya Live to throw a dangdut costume themed party “Gegap Gempita” featuring some fanastic performers including Jidho, Kallula, Diskoria and, of course, Dipha himself.
