A thief impersonating an ojek, a motorbike taxi, has been arrested in West Bali.

The fake ojek driver, identified in local reports as East Java man Samsul Arifin, had made off with the luggage from one of his ‘passengers.’

The woman, however, apparently wasted no time in contacting the police, who quickly caught the man.

“Officers manning the police post at Rambut Siwi saw a motorbike rider with characteristics matching what the victim reported. Two patrol cars chased the man and arrested him on the main road on the way to Yehsumbul Village,” head of Jembrana Police’s Traffic Unit, Assistant Commissioner I Nyoman Sukadana, told Antara Bali.

After handing Arifin over to criminal investigation unit, police found the man had committed similar ojek scams in Bali, according to Sukadana.

Arifin would wait at Ubung, Denpasar’s main bus terminal, and pose as an ojek driver.

On the way to his victims’ destinations, Arifin would give money for his passenger to go buy drinks for them—but instead of waiting, he would speed off with his victims’ luggage.
